We are watching the pandemic happen and the vaccine development happen in real time. To scientists, this is normal and how it goes. Although this is actually going far more smoothly than most infectious diseases, pound for pound and minus the human obstinacy factor. Wish there were a vaccine for that. It's just as deadly as any infectious disease, but I digress.
Scientific illiteracy is a serious problem anyway, but when you pair it with the partisan politics and the ubiquity of social media (the deliberate dissemination of misinformation is an actual destabilization tactic-and it works), it's the perfect storm.
Now that Pfizer has gotten FDA approval on its vaccine, the goalposts are moving. The "unapproved" talking point is now moot, so it's some other manufactured danger.
