It' s about being fair.
If someone works hard and earns a fortune - or creates something that sells huge - or if they are just damned lucky - why ahould we have the right to take what is theirs?
Lucky Indians - they've got this whole continent to themselves - we better take it away from them and give it to someone else..... [ /smartass example ]
Answer we don' t have that right. Pretending we do is the very definition of theft.
I don't think it qualifies as theft. If I win the lottery, I'm pretty well aware that I'll be bumped up a few tax brackets. Fine with me. I won't feel "stolen from."
I make very little money these days. Every dollar counts. But there was a time in my life when I lived in a very expensive apartment and made quite a bit of money. I got taxed a lot. But i didn't mind it. I had a lot. I was fine giving a huge ass percentage of my paycheck to help the rest of the society around me. (And, just between you and me, the rest of society --road workers, emts, etc.) are what made my super cushy, well-paying job possible in the first place.
If someone wants to keep the entire billion dollars he has (tax free), let him go live on a desert island... where all that fucking money will do him zero good. Once he realizes that it is everyone else around him that actually gives that money value, then he can come back and live with us.
