The Hulk shows up in a buncha different colours, I see no reason Superman shouldn’t (not everyone gets this, but Supe’s original skin tone was bronze).

That's true about the Hulk's different colors, but because they were all non-human colors like gray, green, red...it didn't come across as being related to "race" so there was no objection.  My personal favorite was gray, which was the original color.
