Actually, until somewhat recent history, it was not at all obvious that the earth orbited the sun.
You do know that Galileo Galilei was imprisoned by the Catholic Church in 1633 for demonstrating the Earth orbits the sun, right?
You actually think, that to our ancestors, standing and watching the stars move overhead, and the sun and moon moving across the sky, it looked like it was the Earth that was doing the moving?
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
