The issue is deeper than just having an armed populace or even having crucial foreign allies. Algeria had no allies that I can find when they fought for their independence. The FLN’s casualties far outweighed the French casualties. And yet Algeria managed to win the war and their independence.
Ho Chi Minh said “You will kill ten of us, we will kill one of you, but in the end, you will tire of it first.” And that’s basically how the North Vietnamese won, it’s how the FLN won, and it’s how the Taliban wound up winning. They will die in droves, but they will win in the long run because, to put it bluntly, they don’t know when to fucking quit. And it’s not in their best interest to know.
