Multiple attempts with the gun could be made with a variety of different primed cases. If the half cock is correct, it will catch the dropped hammer before the hammer can be pulled back far enough to have enough energy to ignite the primer.
About the only way I could see it happening is if someone installed a very high rate hammer spring - something very unlikely - as doing so would give the trigger a very heavy pull.
