If you don' t know how to handle guns - DON'T!
Do you see any flaw in that plan?
Flaw?
Perhaps just the teensiest bit naive?
I'll give an Australian analogy; 85% of us are urbanites living in half a dozen coastal cities. 35% of my country is named desert. A full 70% is arid and pretty much uninhabitable.
Here your average male fancies himself a 'bush expert', an heir of Crocodile Dundee if you will. He ain't, and people still die from ignorance 'out bush'.
I'd be fascinated to know how many gun owners anywhere have actually received training about gun safety.
In the rest of the US, I don't know. But in California, one has to sign paperwork stating that they have received training on safe operation of the (new) firearm that they are purchasing. That doesn't mean that they know how to safely shoot. I see people at the gun range all the time with their firearms, not being able to remove the magazine or set the safety, and requiring range officer help. They should go through a course that trains them on how to use their equipment prior to use on a public range, to a far greater depth than what they get at the gun store. Always. I worked as a range officer and trainer for about 14 years with the Boy Scouts of America. I've trained hundreds of kids and dozens of adults on range safety and how to run a gun range, in the case of the adults. I can work with the people on the range for the firearm(s) they are using, but there are millions of others who don't have that opportunity.
If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.
