I think it is important that the head of state is not the same as the head of government. I also believe that some sort of reverence for the office of a non-political head-of-state is required to safeguard a democracy.
The Crown is useful as long as it does its constitutional job, and enjoys some popularity. That way, if some dictator comes to power, the Crown will have the backing of the people to dissolve parliament. There are other ways to get a head-of-state. They can be elected or appointed, but that doesn't give the same level of political independence or popular mythology that may be required in a crisis.
If a dictator comes to power in the UK, do you really think he's going to give a wet fart about the dissolution of Parliament?
The monarchy is good for tourism and tabloid fodder, that's really about it.
