What's the problem?

Personally, I see it as an accident of history. They needed the credibility of an established faith because the religious marketplace is super competitive - but they had no intention of holding to precepts of that faith - as evidenced by the simple fact of their engaging in a new faiths construction.
It’s sort of like software.
Example:
A corporation such as Microsoft makes Win NT 4.0. They are not going to throw away the entire source code and start fresh when they start working on Win 2000.
Portions of the code might be rewritten, new functionality would be added, bugs would be fixed, new libraries added.
What ends up happening is that Win 2000 is actually Win NT 5.0.
Win XP is Win NT 6.0 (or whatever number MS has chosen to assign it).
Example:
The same thing happens with hardware/circuit board design. For example, with the XBox 360 the first version. Eventually, they integrated a few of the chips into 1 in order to reduce cost.
They don’t throw away all their knowledge and start from scratch. They make improvements and they print a new version number on the PCB.
Example:
It’s the same with university textbooks, except they call it 2 nd edition, 3 rd edition, and so on.
Example:
It’s the same with cultures. Today’s culture is just an updated version of last year’s (or X timeframe) culture. It’s just that it is hard to demarcate.
Are the jewish god and christian and muslim and mormon the same gods? Not exactly.
But if you ask the followers of these religion, it looks like each of them says that they are worshiping the same god.
Once in a while, I encounter a christian that say muslims and mormons worship another god.
Once in a while, I encounter a muslim that says that christianity is polytheistic (they worship 3 gods).
