Yeah, that's pretty simple. For there to be a defining genetic remnant there has to have been more recent or constant selective pressure, which would strongly imply an extant population to breed with. In the context of this thread..though, it's pretty strange all the way down to the bottom. HSN is a contemporaneous evolution with respect to HSS. Not a step on the way to us, or in any sense less evolved than ourselves. The origins of our revulsion to mixed race marriages may lie here, ironically.
