Not at all over nothing. The sunni shia split was precipitated by competing claims to the legendary throne of big mo. It was the issue of islam in it's day. Sunni islam, and more particularly wahabism today, won that argument. They buddied up to emerging states (and western powers) going back to around the point where the us was being founded.
