And, so, another bluff?

Actually, the US pulled Jupiter nuclear missiles out of Turkey to help resolve that crisis. Our move wasn't a bluff, it was more a matter of us realizing we didn't know the true intentions of the USSR and deciding to de-escalate.

Having said that, I'd like to think if it occurred again, we could use diplomacy to resolve the matter, and if not, put SSBNx around Russia or the Chinese coastline to enact a little persuasion.

And as a last thought, because of the march of technology, neither China nor Russia need to have nukes that close to threaten us. Remember, in 1962, missiles had shorter ranges, and the Soviets only had about 20 ICBMs capable of hitting America from the USSR, with poor accuracy; that has certainly changed. The Chinese have a much smaller but still potent combination of ICBMs and SLBMx, so again, no need to get in yo face.

Reducing flight-times is nice, but with modern MIRVs and decoys,  SLBMs, and nuclear cruise missiles, the 30 minutes it takes for a missile barrage from Russia, China, or either's subs (less time n the latter case) to hit America will still flummox any defensive arrangements.

So I guess Russia will have to invade the whole world to feel safe. Of course, the threat of nukes being placed in Ukraine was always just a pretense. Putin wants to make "Russia Great Again"
