That’s not exactly right. Almost all ancient societies viewed sex with a child who hadn’t reached puberty as a crime (or, at the very least, seriously frowned upon). Someone  who had reached puberty - male or female - was considered an adult.

Almost all sources claim that Muhammad and Aisha were married when she was six and the marriage wasn’t consummated until she was nine. While it isn’t common for a female to achieve menarche at that age, it’s not impossible. In 7th century Arabic societies, married sex with a post-pubescent nine year old girl wouldn’t have raised any eyebrows. It’s anathema to us, of course, because we live in a different society.

In fact, the three years gap between marriage and consummation is a pretty good indication that Muhammad was waiting for the girl to reach puberty (in other words, to become an adult).
