In the months before he died, he was feeding pigeons.  I did not mean to imply that he died while feeding pigeons, only that he "died penniless".

I only care to set the record straight.

For what it’s worth, I don’t have any concerns about your mental health. Your sentence structure, on the other hand, is another matter.

Suppose I wrote, ‘Edward Q. Flooberminker died penniless, riding a roller coaster’. Your first thought might reasonably be, ‘How the hell did a penniless man buy a ticket?’

Also, since you’re interested in ‘set(ting) the record straight’, Tesla wasn’t penniless when he died. The Westinghouse corporation was paying his rent and giving him a monthly stipend equivalent to $2600 in today’s money.
