There is no scenario where Russia gets victim points after all the shit pulled in Ukraine thus far (bombing hospitals anyone). Russia doesn't care about justifying its actions' It's going to escalate its attacks regardless because it's desperate to win at any cost. Oh, and NATO isn't attacking Russia it's Ukraine that's attacking Russia.

 If the war stays in Ukraine, we can keep pushing the narrative that Russia isn't a victim in this.

No, if we keep it in Ukraine Russia will have fully operational bases they can use for bombing. No one will buy Russia is a victim considering they're the ones who started this shit. It would be like Hilter whining to the Allies that they invaded Germany after all the shit they pulled. This is a very silly argument.

Once the war comes to Russia, all bets are off, and they are justified in striking back hard as hell, and freezing people to death.

Russia already believes all bets are off(except nukes because they will use those ever) you seem to think Russia has been holding back or something. They have not been. They have thrown virtually all their conventional arms into this conflict and have watched them be ground into the mud. They are freaking mobilizing Museum pieces to bolster their forces and buying defective ammunition from North Korea for fucks sake.
