I don't think he thinks of it as a metaphore. He thinks of it as an event that definitely happened based on the words of a text which makes a claim, and by the way of supporting that claim produced nothing but bullshit. He is basically saying that, if every testable part of a story is shown false, that should not subtract from the credibility of the story overall.
