I am not shocked at all about the what seems to be lack of education in the science department. I once confronted my highly religious cousin from the south about this subject. She refused to even discuss it. I lived in Texas for 7 years and went to college there - the problem does not lie in the educational system. For believers, It is easier to accept to have been created by their God because it makes them feel special. Merely being a fluke of nature's evolutionary process and selection is not "special" at all. Therefore, one will practice ignorance and continue to believe what the preacher man and the bible is teaching and refute any proof or argument presented against this - even in school.
Now .. ask a Texan or anyone in the bible belt what the basic purpose in life is .........
