Vlad the impaler,   Realizing his outclassed military force could never repulse ottoman forces in actual battle, successfully repulsed sultan Mehmet II  by impaling 25000 people on stakes along the anticipated route of advance of the ottoman army.

The sultan explained that he retreated after seeing the appalling spectacle because he didn’t want to kill a person who had done such a great deed as Vlad had.
