What are the benefits of not being religious, versus being religious?
No dogma, no doctrine, for a start.
I am completely able to follow where the evidence leads, whether it it disagrees with any religion.
I want my internal model of reality to map as closely as possible to observed reality. Not being biased by any religion gives me a big advantage in accomplishing that goal.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
