Speaking of immortals, and how myths can appear similar on the surface and yet carry vast difference just beneath...The idea of immortals does not feature very heavily in what we know of northern European myth. There are many instances of mortals being transported to "timeless realms" only to return ages later, being fully mortal the entire time. Mortals living out their lives in these "time altered" realms with visits to the overworld, seeming immortal to their fellow men but not actually being so. Even some of the "gods" of these pantheons can be seen as parts of this narrative, as many age and grow old as the narratives are handed down through time.
