Gender is a word, like all words it defines what most people understand it to mean. in this context I am not sure exactly what you're saying, how does one reject common usage of a word? FWIW I remember people rejecting the word gay, when it's etymology changed ot refer to homosexuality, it seems odd to me, like refusing to accept the tide is coming in.
