That's a blast from the past. When I was a kid, Mum did week-ahead baking (making enough bread for the whole family for an entire week). She'd save us scraps of dough that we'd roll into balls or other shapes and leave them in a slow oven overnight. They came out a shiny black with small crystals protruding here and there.
One of my brothers caught a bit of barney for telling his classmates that we had an uncle who was an astronaut and these lumps were moon rocks he brought back. He sold them for 50p each and made a little money before he was found out.
