Well, to my understanding, American Football is derived from the game of Rugby, originally Rugby Football as it was supposedly invented at Rugby School. What you refer to as European Football is probably soccer, a name derived from the public school diminutive form of Association Football, as opposed to Rugby's diminutive Rugger.
"Handegg" is definitely a much better name though.
