No different than Pharaoh telling all the Egyptians that He was God. The Pope is one of the most powerful people on the planet, and on that note, I'm pretty sure all of the most powerful people believe in God.

Powerful is not the same as informed.

Also, the last sentence strikes me as argumentum ad electum, if I may coin a phrase.
