No need to ascribe malice or treachery when short sighted idiocy is reason enough. Though I admit that I wouldn't be overly surprised if orange fascist would be some kind of foreign asset - it's not like he have anything resembling principles.
And sometimes malice or treachery is brought on by short-sighted idiocy. I think that's the case here.
