'Fuckwit' does not mean stupid, although a fuckwitted person may ALSO be stupid.
It's kind of shorthand for a whole range of things from terminally naive and ignorant to common-or-garden-variety fool. The poor fellow's bloody minded desperation makes him a complete fuckwit, but I agree, not completely stupid.

in a debate, it's common for those who don't have an arguement to attack the person rather than the claims. this is often done in politics and the media and is very effective.
