Actually, that’s not the case. AFAIK, military personnel are not required to follow illegal orders, even from the President. In fact, they have a duty to disobey unlawful orders.

Thank you for pointing this out. We had classes in basic training about the Geneva Conventions and our duties and obligations.
It rarely works out well for the objector, to be fair, but we have a positive duty to say "no, that's illegal, I will not do it."
