We do tend to think, in error, that other people are more or less like us. It goes a long way to greasing the gears of social interaction. Imagine compulsively wondering whether the other guy was a cannibal. Or, if you're a cannibal...that he might not be. Fucking weirdo!
If the reason John doesn't believe in the mountain of other gods comes down to them giving him the badfeels, the reason he believes in a particular one being that it gives him goodfeels, and not anything about the facts of their existence per se, he would be likely to assume as much about others. We could approach any of his other comments through the same prism. Why did he hilariously believe that people who jump out of planes must feel more or less about their chutes like he feels about a god? Because he doesn't know better, he only knows himself. Conversely, why did he believe that religious faith was a trust with good reason™..because he..is faithless.
