I personally think that ship has long since sailed. That said, it's become clear that SOMETHING has to replace fossil fuels. If we haven't hit peak oil already, it's only a matter of time before we do.
About the only thing holding back renewals at the moment is storage, and we have viable solutions, just not governments willing to implement them.
Renewables, fix the storage problem by building large scale storage measures alongside building large scale renewable energy generators and you've the fossil problem licked. We have the solution, problem is that the current whisperers to power aren't in a place to benefit.
