He hasn't been able to cause as much strife as them only because he is constrained by a system which has much greater checks on his power.

I am not so confident its the better safeguards. Actually the (top) judiciary and congress are much more complicit than they ever were in Weimar. The biggest roadblock to autocracy is imho still the utter incompetence of him and most, if not all, he has surrounded himself with.

As i posted before, Article 48 of Weimar had exactly the same intend/purpose as posse commitatus, but both are potentially worthless if you have a parliament not being able or willing to take its intended role given by the constitution. Separation of power only works in a modern constitutional state as long as the powers are really struggling against each other and not collaborating in an overthrow of your system.

Once Trump decides to make full use of the Marines/National Guard, nothing matters, particularly any "guard rails", but the complacency or willingness to be complicit of those. Either one would suffice, as so many takeovers have demonstrated.

Dont fool yourself to think that any magic "rules" installed by oh-so-wise founding father matter in the slightest, once you have some major players (like army, police, head of state, parliament, judiciary) willing to be complicit or complacent to a "hostile takeover". Rules dont matter, at all, once "they" decide to dont give a fuck about them anymore.
