I think there's a world of difference between Afghanistan and Ukraine. Getting out of Afghanistan was a smart move, though its execution was bungled badly.
Of course Russia is a big country and its sheer size makes it hard to defeat, but it's also riven by corruption, mistrust, and the squandering of its resources.
As for Trump "knowing what he's doing", I'd need to see some evidence. His grasp of history and diplomacy does not inspire confidence. And yes, we have to guard what's left of our democracy, but we have to help other democracies too, lest we be left alone in a world run by the BRICS.
