Look at what's going on here in Texas, using redistricting to add more Republican seats to the House of Representatives -- and California's response to do the same in favor of the Dems.
This arguing over control of the House is precisely one of the major issues that led to our Civil War in 1861. Different shades and hues, but the painting is very much the same. The sides are lining up.
The popular comparison seems to be 1920s and -30s Germany, but I think the more accurate assessment is found in 1840s and -50s American domestic politics. There are of course big differences in all three comparisons, but in terms of our domestic politics, our domestic strife in the mid-19th century seems more apt, although in our current context fascism across the entire country rather than splitting seems more likely as the end result.
