Mr. Trump, who is determined to get a Nobel Peace Prize, made no mention of his previous insistence that there needed to be an immediate cease-fire as the outcome of the meeting.

If not, Mr. Trump told reporters days ago, “there will be very severe consequences.”

But by the time Mr. Trump was interviewed by the Fox News host Sean Hannity shortly after his meeting with Mr. Putin, he said he did not think sanctions would be necessary for a while. And in an overnight post on his social media website, Mr. Trump made clear that he had walked away from the cease-fire demand.

Just as a note, Trump set an August 8 deadline for a ceasefire or else he would impose severe sanctions. #taco
