The American (2010) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_American_(2010_film)
A high anxiety thriller about a gunsmith working for a crime syndicate (Clooney) and his awful, paranoid existence (and a nod to the Day of the Jackal). Hunted by Swedish assassins, our hero flees to Rome, and then to the lovely scenery of Abruzzo. The narrow, steep stairwells of the towns and uncomfortable lighting echo The Third Man and other classic Noir tropes. There's a frantic element to the paranoia, as the lens follows hero's thousand mile stare. Good performances by Maria Violante Placido and Paolo Bonacelli add emotional depth to the otherwise wooden character of our hero. A fair amount of action but a mountain of tension. The countryside is lovely and the cinematography at times overshadows the acting. And lots of subtle and overt homages to classic Italian cinema (Once Upon A Time In The West is playing on a television in a bar, for example). An entertaining thriller.
