Living in Iran in the 70s, we Americans were accorded a mixed bag. On a personal level, much respect and laughter over cultural iconography, but there was considerable, and palpable, anger over the Mossadegh overthrow and before that the deposition of Reza I.
Yes ... we have fallen in international respect in the last ten years, because our leadership has failed us. But I suspect many nations, aside from Iran, did not view us as the "greatest nation", but rather as an imposition. Chileans, Guatemalans, and plenty of Caribbean folk saw us in the light.
Neil Armstrong and Hollywood movies aside, I think the world's opinion of America has always been mixed. I think it was mostly us who saw ourselves as the "greatest nation".
