In fairness, I doubt it’s anywhere near the only cause if they do establish it as a cause. My understanding of the causes of autism, it seems to be largely hereditary with some room for stuff happening in utero. And, in fairness, according to the FDA, the issue isn’t quite as resolved as you think it is. That said, what we have so far is enough to establish a potential correlation*, but there’s nowhere near enough evidence to demonstrate any causation, and indeed, there’s studies that contradict it. But it’s still less blatantly wrong than attempts to link it to vaccines,
* evidently, the biggest correlation seems to be with mothers who take lots of acetaminophen over their pregnancies. And given acetaminophen’s lack of a therapeutic window, that can’t be a good thing in any case.
