I gave Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy another try. I stand by my original assessment - these are bad movies. It’s not just that there’s not enough source material for nine hours of film, or that Jackson played fast and loose with the story (although both of those are undeniably true). They just…stink.
The films drag, they’ve all got plot holes you could drive an articulated lorry through, the acting is mediocre, the effects are sub-par, the score seems out of place with the action, the fight scenes are muddy and poorly choreographed, and the direction seems phoned in.
The only bright spot is Billy Connelly as Dain Ironfoot. Very funny.
