Back in the late 1970s, my high school served up cordon bleu for lunch one day. None of us at the table had ever experienced nor had even heard of this dish. We were completely perplexed. In keeping with the maturity level of young people at that age, we offered up theories of what this was. Somebody suggested it was a dead rat. When someone stuck the thing with a fork and bleu cheese oozed out, there were cries of, "Oh my god, it's full of puss!"
Never forgot that. It took me a long time as an adult to appreciate cordon bleu. Considering that first experience, it's amazing I ever did.
