I'd heard of him well-before. IIRC I first heard of him with the suicide-boat attack on USS Roberts (correction; it was the twin embassy attack in Sudan and another country). The name was in the public sphere if you were paying attention.
The amazing thing here is Trump paying attention.
I would have been eight at the time of the embassy attacks, so I guess I wasn't paying attention.
