My mother's side of the family is Mormon, and though I haven't been exposed to it much (wasn't interested), I do have a little insight.
It's the whole "my body is a temple" thing. Mormon doctrine is that your body is sacred and you shouldn't contaminate it. I believe this doctrine applies only to "elective" contamination - it's OK to use medicine.
For what it's worth, my Mom's brother was a practicing Mormon - he smoked, drank coffee and booze, and was gay. The booze ended up killing him when he was 41. I have no idea how he rationalized all of that - he died when I was in my teens, and I didn't know he was a practicing Mormon. Didn't know he was gay either, until after he died (I only met his partner once, and it was presented as a "roommate" situation).
It's my understanding that a lot of Mormons indulge in things they aren't supposed to. I would imagine that they keep it pretty hushed up though, there is a lot of social pressure within the LDS community to refrain.

When I was in my 20's, I had a girlfriend who's family was devoutly christian (the looney tunes variety). They all actually believed the Proctor & Gamble satanist connection and refused to allow any P&G products in their homes. (For those that don't know the story about the P&G / satan connection, there's a page on snopes.com about it, Wikipedia mentions it as well).
