That's why they invoke miracles to explain all the inconsistencies away. I've even heard it claimed that perhaps God shrunk the animals and put them into a deep sleep in order to allow them all to fit aboard the ark and survive for so long without needing to eat. Of course that still doesn't explain all the other problems with the entire story.
