Because God told him to, and that’s reason enough for any nutter. We know he was a nutter because it never occurred to him to ask why God couldn’t just re-create the animals after the Flood.

At least there's consistency RE incest in the bible - Adam and Eve's offspring mated with eachother, allegedly, just as did the "sibling" offspring of the animals on the ark. One female, one male...it's turtles all the way down.

God explicitly told him to do so, as far as I remember the Old Testament.

The story itself is so naive... I'm surprised how anyone beyond 3 years old can take it seriously. There doesn't seem to be alot of metaphorical sense in it either.
