For the longest time it was assumed to exist only in embryos and fetuses, but around 2005, "life" was found in the body of a brain-dead woman named Terri Schiavo, and many pro-lifers started to work under the assumption that all brain-dead people have this thing called "life." And, of course, people who have been born and whose brains were functioning do not possess "life."
While I don't get the Dune reference, I thought that was epic. That definitely deserves to be framed. It's funny you mention Terri Schiavo, because on the Atheism and Life Support thread I was going to respond by singing the Terri Schiavo song.
"Sisters, you know only the north; I have traveled in the south lands. There are churches there, believe me, that cut their children too, as the people of Bolvangar did--not in the same way, but just as horribly. They cut their sexual organs, yes, both boys and girls; they cut them with knives so that they shan't feel. That is what the Church does, and every church is the same: control, destroy, obliterate every good feeling. So if a war comes, and the Church is on one side of it, we must be on the other, no matter what strange allies we find ourselves bound to."
