Whether it holds us back or not is irrelevant.
Once you declare a set of values to being an atheist, declarations of values or communities simply make it cultish and susceptible to schism until it gives true meaning to the theist idea that atheism is a belief system subject to equivalent criticism.
While not directly critical of your point, and while secular organisations exist, they are primarily lobbyist type organisations.
When you start groups, like Camp Quest, (Camps to encourage skeptical thinking in children). I do not blame theists for being declaring it brainwashing of children and that to some extent does more harm than good imo and hardens resolve against atheism as a whole.
In short; once you declare an atheist organisation as an alternative to religion, and fulfilling emotional needs, you are promoting a subjective opinion which weakens the foundation of objective empricism that Atheism stands for.

Self-authenticating private evidence is useless, because it is indistinguishable from the illusion of it. ― Kel, Kelosophy Blog
If you’re going to watch tele, you should watch Scooby Doo. That show was so cool because every time there’s a church with a ghoul, or a ghost in a school. They looked beneath the mask and what was inside?
The f**king janitor or the dude who runs the waterslide. Throughout history every mystery. Ever solved has turned out to be. Not Magic. ― Tim Minchin, Storm
