A lot of them mindlessly identify themselves as Christian because they were christened, so they answer the question...that's my hypothesis.
I refuse to believe that 71% of the population (not including other religions) believe in god.
Well first of all the article you linked claims 72% in England and 65% in Scotland in the 2001 census, which is 11 years ago.
The same article you linked to also says "They prefer to use the British Social Attitudes survey, carried out annually by the National Centre for Social Research, which paints a picture of a less-religious country, with 51% describing themselves as non-religious and 43% as Christian."

I agree that the majority of the UK population are obviously not fundamental Christian creationists; however, I have a hypothesis that the large majority of individuals in UK are "soft" Christians who, if you asked them directly, would admit that they believe in a "higher power." My hyposthesis is backed up by hard evidence from the UK Census survey (71% Christian.) http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-12507319

You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.
