Actually, the claim was that it was fundamentalist thinking that inclines believers toward totalitarian thinking. I would argue that communism as practiced in China, Russia, Cambodia, and North Korea IS a form of fundamentalist thinking, in the broad sense of committment to holding to dogma when given a choice between dogma and contrary evidence.
