The Catholic church realized a long time ago that wives tend to become too involved with the direction of a man's life and his money. Thus, in order to keep control, they simply took wives out of the equation. Clearly it's not in the Bible that a man need be celibate to be a preacher in a church. Plus, wasn't it Jesus who was the great purveyor of marriage?
The whole system stinks of corruption.
I heard it was because priests were accumulating vast amounts of wealth and land through marriage, which pretty much clashed with their humble reputations.
Seeing as the Vatican long ago abandoned its humble reptutation, I should think they'd want priests to be accumulating power once again. Maybe they'll change their policy, if only to increase their economic power.
What falls away is always, and is near.
