The original plan was to put 6 people in a house, shielded from the outside world, and just let them sit there for 6 months and see what happens. After 2 months the ratings dwindled because nothing was happening and it makes for boring tv. Then they started introducing some of these mindcontrol games and the ratings shot up again (that and the first love affair started and there was a chance of seeing sex live on TV 
).
