I have my reasons for thinking it is a philosophy. Aren't there bits that strike you as being too perfect in the sense that the situation seems rather structured than an actual telling of history? For example, the two thieves on either side of Jesus on the crosses just so happened to have opposite beliefs on who Jesus was. They're faced with death yet one gets saved and the other didn't. Why didn't they both either believe in him or not believe in him? It seems as if it had to be one that believed and one that didn't because then a teaching can come out of that.
