It has always been much easier for our species to make up answers and group to protect those placebos, than it is to do the work to find out the actual reality.
You kick the credulous hard enough they will cling to the first life raft thrown to them, even if it a superstition. The superstition might save them, but it only means that sugar pills do get us by.
Evolution isn't about humans finding facts. All life gets by by merely work and luck to the point of reproduction. If someone believes in crop circles and Ouija boards and manages to make a baby, while a teenage atheists walks across the street and gets killed by a car, the credulous one has managed to make life and the atheist did not.
